Why should an organization plan with operational efficiency? Fail to plan => plan to fail Planning is the key to success We are all students with limited amount of time and resources Without proper planning your organization will be disorganized and unprofessional 4
What is planning? From Dictionary.com: v. planned, plan·ning, plans To formulate a scheme or program for the accomplishment, enactment, or attainment of: ie. plan a campaign. To have as a specific aim or purpose; intend: ie They plan to buy a house. To draw or make a graphic representation of. ie schedule 5
Realistic vs Unattainable Goals Determine what goals are realistic and what is attainable before setting up a plan Poor time management can cause realistic goals to be unattainable Short term planning should always be for realistic goals Long term planning can change and cause a goal to be unattainable 6
Long Term Planning Plans for the future (month/years) Forms the foundation for short term planning along the way Examples are goals for a position or goals for the school year Can be adjusted, but seldom 7
Short Term Planning Plans for the hour/day/week/month Fills in the details of decisions that were made regarding the long term plan Can be adjusted frequently – plans change 8

OGSM Example Community Outreach Objective: Have NSBE members start tutoring on a regular basis in the Greater Hartford area. Goal: To strengthen the pipeline to facilitate growth for black engineers in the technical arena. Strategies: Coordinate with other minority organizations to get a good number of tutors. Tutor at the North End After School Program in Hartford. Explore other ways we can impact the youth in the Greater Hartford area. Measures: See the difference in the grades of the students. General analysis of how we made a difference. 14

Protocol Make sure everyone on the board has clearly defined roles Set expectations at the beginning Develop and follow protocol for your organization Have many layers of checks and balances 16
Efficiency Have deadlines scheduled before the real deadline Document assigned tasks Review task list weekly If an e-board member is not living up to expectation, have verbal and written warnings Replace an e-board member if needed 17
